Worldwide Caddie Corner Interview: By Laura Drumm
Club
Caddies are Cool too!
J. Patrick
Fox has worked clubs for years. J. Patrick Fox is 33 years
old and plays to a 15 handicap. His father, who allowed him
to join him on the course at the age of 8, first introduced
him to the game of golf. Patrick was hooked and wanted to
be a part of this great game. After high school Patrick worked
in the golf business for 5 years at Nevada Bobs and Golf USA
Retail, as a Driving Range manager, and as a professional
instructor for a parks and recreation adult education program.
Patrick
received a call from a friend who was caddying at Old Marsh
in Florida who asked him if he would like to work with him
caddying at Old Marsh in Florida for the winter. This was
followed up by an invitation to caddy at Maidstone in East
Hampton Long Island NY May through October. He never thought
he would enjoy caddying so much. "No two days are alike!",
says Patrick.
As
to Fox's favorite player it is a toss-up between Gary Player
and Greg Norman. He admires "Fluff" Mike Cowan because of
his great dedication and relationship with Peter Jacobsen
and Tiger Woods.
His
most exciting experience was when he caddied for Rick Hartman
of the Atlantic CC. Hartman was a two-time winner of the
Metropolitan PGA Chapter. Patrick proudly declared, "We
shot a 65 at Maidstone that round!". The most famous player
Fox worked for was Sean Adams at the Senior PGA Championship
in 1998. The most humorous experience he has had caddying
was listening to Lee Travino work the crowd in Naples at
the Old Aetna Challenge. The most memorable was working
in a group with Gary Player and Lee Travino at the Intellenet
Challenge a Senior PGA Event.
Patrick
works best with quiet consistent players, and likes to work
with players around the green. He says he works best with
serious fundamentalists who can still lighten up a bit.
When
asked about having an association for caddies. Patrick said
the following, " I feel the efforts toward providing professionalism
and having an association for benefits i.e. Health, Dental
supplies etc. is most beneficial. I would be happy to promote
this association any way possible by wearing clothing or
by any other means.
J.
Patrick Fox is not related to Michael J. Fox. He doesn't
have to be, he has what it takes to be a great person and
a great caddie, he has a great Attitude!
